Built and running

We run the software optical shops sell through.

An optical business is a shop, a lab and a clinic at once. Off-the-shelf retail software handles the shop and ignores the prescription, the lens order, and the branch that has the frame in stock.

This is the one sector where we are not describing capability. Optician Dynamics is our own product, live with paying customers, and we carry its uptime and support ourselves.

Sound familiar?

A week in this business.

If three or more of these are true, the problem is usually not the tools. It is that none of them talk to each other.

  • Someone phones the other branch to ask whether they have the frame
  • Prescriptions live in a book, and last year’s is hard to find
  • The lab order and the sale are tracked in two different places
  • Nobody knows the day’s real position until someone adds it up by hand
  • Stock counts take two days and are wrong by the time they finish

What we’d build

The parts that matter here.

Point of sale built for dispensing, not general retail
Prescription capture and full Rx history
Frame and lens catalogues with supplier pricing
Lab routing and job tracking
Real-time stock across every branch
Purchasing, payables and receivables
Double-entry accounts with trial balance and P&L
End-of-day reconciliation that catches the difference

Which route

Configure something proven, or build it?

Most vendors answer this the way that suits them. Here is how it usually goes in this sector — and we will tell you plainly which side you are on.

Open-source ERP

Usually faster and cheaper

Rarely the right answer here. Generic ERP has no concept of a prescription, a lens specification or a lab job, so you end up paying to rebuild the parts that matter.

How we do this

Custom build

When the standard parts run out

Optician Dynamics already exists and is running. For most optical businesses the question is configuration and migration, not a build.

How we do this

Questions

We have two branches. Is that enough to need this?
Two is usually the point where it starts paying. One shop can hold its stock position in someone’s head; two cannot, and the phone calls between them are the tell.
What happens to the data we already have?
Migration is part of the work — customers, prescriptions, stock and outstanding balances. We reconcile it against your existing numbers rather than asking you to trust the import.
